Curator's note

Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park sits on a sprawling 1,914‑hectare tract north of Nagpur’s Gorewada Lake, the kind of space that promises a safari without a passport but still feels half‑finished. The real draw is the 10‑kilometre savanna drive that rolls past a reluctant pride of Asian lions, a herd of gaurs and a surprisingly content herd of sambar; timing is everything – aim for the 8 a.m. slot when the animals are still awake and the heat hasn’t turned the grass into a wilted carpet. The zoo’s main enclosure for white‑tusked elephants is functional, but the promised tiger and rhino paddocks remain a work‑in‑progress, so temper expectations and skip the aquarium‑style fish tanks that feel tacked on. Entry is ₹150 for adults, ₹75 for children, and a separate ₹300 for the safari bus, which is best booked online to avoid the Saturday queue that swells to a small city’s worth of impatient families. Visit between November and February when the lake’s mist adds a cool sheen and the monsoon’s soggy roads don’t wash out the park’s unpaved trails; the pre‑monsoon heat in March‑May is oppressive, and the park’s limited shade can turn a morning stroll into an afternoon sauna. Stay in Nagpur’s Sadar Bazaar area for budget rooms and easy rail links, and allocate at least a half‑day – you’ll get the big‑game drive, a quick look at the reptile house, and a decent lunch of millet‑based thali at the on‑site mess before the park shuts at 5 p.m.
