Curator's note

Ghoramara Island, a five‑square‑kilometre speck fifty‑odd miles downstream from Kolkata, is the sort of place you go to witness climate‑induced decay rather than to chase postcard scenery. The only sensible way to get there is a cramped, air‑conditioned bus to Namkhana followed by a rickety launch from Joka that runs on the tide; any delay means you’ll be stuck in mud at high water. Once ashore, the flat, salt‑stubbled mudflats stretch in a bleak horizon, punctuated by the skeletal remains of a schoolhouse and a crumbling government office – both of which are technically accessible but offer little beyond a grim Instagram backdrop. There are no cafés, no Wi‑Fi, and the nearest medical help is a two‑hour boat ride back to the mainland, so bring water, a sturdy hat and a first‑aid kit. The best time to visit is November to February when the monsoon has receded and the heat is tolerable; the summer months turn the island into a steaming, mosquito‑infested swamp. Spend a morning watching the river’s slow retreat and a late‑afternoon walk along the embankment to feel the tug of rising tides; you’ll leave with a sobering sense of impending loss rather than a souvenir shop. Two days is generous – one day gets you the basics, the second lets you watch the sunset fade over an island that may vanish within your lifetime. Skip any guided “eco‑tour” that promises wildlife spotting – the only critters here are crabs and the occasional water‑bird, and the guides tend to be more interested in selling you bottled water than explaining the erosion. Stay overnight in a basic guesthouse in Namkhana; the island itself has no accommodation, and the lack of lights at night is a feature, not a bug.
