Curator's note

Ghadhasaru Lake, perched at 3,470 m above the Chamba foothills, is the sort of high‑altitude postcard that will make your Instagram followers jealous, but only if you survive the trek and the weather. The 1 km rim circles a turquoise basin at the foot of Gadasaru Peak, a holy mute that locals swear to in whispered prayers; expect modest shrines of stone and a lone rope‑tied flag fluttering over the water. The approach from Devikothi village is a 7‑kilometre forested ascent that eats half a day on a clear July morning and doubles in time if clouds linger – the path is a mixture of uneven stone steps and mule tracks, with occasional yak‑herders stopping to share a cup of butter‑tea. Stay in the simple homestay at Devikothi (no Wi‑Fi, but tea is decent) and set out before sunrise; the lake’s surface mirrors the sunrise hues better than any mountain resort. September to early November is the only window when the passes are thawed yet the monsoon hasn’t dumped fresh snow, and you’ll avoid the June‑July “biblical heat” that turns the trail into a sweaty slog. Skip the late‑season crowds that drift in from the Kinnaur circuit – they bring plastic bottles and a noisy drone, ruining the lake’s solitary vibe. Two days is honest for the trek, a night, and a respectful sunrise on the water’s edge; any longer feels like over‑paying for a view you could have earned in a weekend.
