Curator's note

Kaziranga’s geography is a messy, all‑season wetland that reads like a textbook on why the Indian government loves a good conservation headline. The park sprawls across the Brahmaputra’s flood‑plain in Golaghat and Nagaon, bounded north‑west by the majestic Lohit River and south‑east by a ragged line of tea‑garden estates that double as unofficial safari outlooks. Its 1,400 km² of tall grasses, low‑lying marshes and riverine islands (the famed “Brahmaputra Islands” near Baguri) swell each monsoon, turning the whole of central Assam into a water‑logged maze where rhinos—about 2,400 of them—wade through knee‑deep silt. The grasslands of the eastern sector (near the Karbi Anglong foothills) are surprisingly dry in winter, making elephant sightings more reliable then, while the central “Cremation Ground” zone hosts the world‑class birdlife that earned the IBA tag. Best time to visit is November to February; the water recedes, roads from Burhapahar to the Iron‑coloured Elephant Camp become passable, and the rickety jeep‑safari rides actually stick to the ground. Stay at the modest but clean Pumori Guesthouse near the western gate for early‑morning jeep departures; skip the overcrowded Lohit‑gate lodges that charge premium rates for the same view. Avoid July–September unless you relish mosquito storms and river‑borne silt in your lenses. Two days is honest for a sunrise rhino drive and an evening bird‑watch at Kaffir‑Loo, four lets you venture into the more remote Karbi‑border grasslands and catch a night‑safari in the marshes—if you can stomach the cold, damp air and the occasional roar of a stray elephant.
