Curator's note

Gautam Kund, a shallow, muddy pond on the outskirts of Kamtaul in Darbhanga district, lives more in the realm of pious legend than scenic allure, but if your itinerary already includes the Mithila circuit it merits a brief stop. The water is unremarkably silted, the banks flanked by an unassuming brick wall that once guarded the crumbling Gautam Ashram, and the whole site is plastered with faded signs recounting its link to Maharshi Gautama and a footnote in the Ramayana. The only time the kund stirs is Maghi Purnima (mid‑January), when a throng of devotees in saffron dhotis descend to perform the ritual bath that locals swear wipes away a lifetime of sins; arriving before dawn guarantees a spot away from the crush at the northern embankment. If you’re not visiting during the full moon, the pond is best seen at sunrise, when the mist lifts and the distant shikhara of the ashram glints faintly. Stay in a modest guesthouse on Kamtaul Road – the few rooms there are cheap, clean and within walking distance – and skip the souvenir stalls that open only during the festival; they sell generic trinkets at inflated prices. Two hours is honest; any longer feels like a pilgrimage you didn’t sign up for. Visit between November and February to avoid the monsoon deluge that turns the access road into a quagmire.
