Curator's note

Dudhsagar is the kind of spectacle you’ll chase of a half‑day from Panaji, then realise it’s a 60‑km slog of winding, pothole‑riddled road that makes you question why you ever left the beach. The falls drop 310 m in four sheer tiers, the water frothing into a milky veil at the base of a crescent‑shaped valley that feels strangely untouched until the troop of jeeps and trekkers arrives. The practical route is the 2 hour train from Madgaon to the dismantled railway‑bridge stop; hop off early, hire a licensed jeep at the gate of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary, and be ready for a 45‑minute bumpy ride through dense Western Ghats foliage. Arrive at the lower falls at low tide – the pool is then shallow enough to wade, and the roar is tolerable; at high tide the water surges into a white‑curtained torrent that drowns the path and forces you back to the bridge. Bring sturdy shoes, a raincoat you don’t mind getting soaked, and a dry change. Skip the dreaded ‘water‑fall trek’ from the top – the trail is steep, ill‑marked and overrun by treacherous mud. Best visited from November to February when the monsoon has thinned and the forest smells of eucalyptus rather than rot; avoid the July‑August deluge unless you relish being swept away. Stay either in a budget guesthouse in Collem or a boutique resort in South Goa, then make the drive an early‑morning escapade and head back before the sun scorches the tea‑green canopy.
