Curator's note

Droog Fort, perched 1,500 metres above sea level amid the Nonsuch Tea Estate, is the kind of ruin that appeals to the few who like their history dusted with pine‑scented mist rather than polished marble. The trek from the tea‑plantation gate at Ketti Road is a 4 km slog that takes about 90 minutes if you’re fit; the path is steep, uneven and littered with tea‑pruned cuttings, so bring sturdy boots and a water bottle – the estate’s tea‑room at the base will still be open at 10 am, but it’s closed after noon. The sole surviving wall – a crumbling, basalt slab that once framed a Tipu‑Sultan outpost – offers a panoramic sweep of the Nilgiri hills, the Bundla Reservoir and, on a clear day, the distant silhouettes of Ooty and Coonoor. Arrive early in the dry season (January to March) to avoid the monsoon’s leeches and the oppressive humidity that turns the trail into a swamp; the pre‑monsoon weeks in late May are unbearably humid, while the monsoon itself makes the steps treacherous. The fort is not a museum, so don’t expect interpretive signs – a quick Google search before you go will spare you from wandering in circles. Skip the souvenir stalls that pop up near the tea‑estate exit; they’re overpriced and far from the rugged charm that brought you here. Stay the night at Grange Lodge or a heritage homestay in Coonoor for a proper nightcap of eucalyptus‑infused air before you tackle the ascent again at sunrise, when the mist lifts and the ruins finally look like the strategic lookout they once were.
