Curator's note

The Digamber Jain Bada Mandir in Hastanpur, perched on the ancient banks of the Ganges, is the oldest Jain shrine you’ll find in this Brahmin‑laden stretch of Uttar Pradesh, devoted to Shantinatha, the sixteenth Tirthankara, and it rewards patience more than polish. It is best visited in the cool months of November to February; the summer heat makes the open courtyards feel like a furnace, and the monsoon turns the surrounding fields into soggy hell. Arrive via Meerut (train) or Agra (bus), then take a rickshaw from the Hastanpur railway halt – the ride itself is a lesson in chaotic traffic and roadside tea stalls. Inside, the towering marble sanctum and the intricately carved ‘Madanika’ pillars are undeniably beautiful, but the real draw is the silent morning ‘pratiksha’ when devout Jains circumambulate the mandir in a hushed procession; arriving after 10 am means you’ll mainly see tourists and a lingering incense haze. Skip the overpriced “heritage” guidebooks that market the site as a “must‑see Jain wonder” – the narrative is thin and the entry fee, Rs 30, covers everything. For a night’s rest, book a modest guesthouse in the nearby town of Meerut; the city’s railway station is far superior to Hastanpur’s, and you’ll wake up to a quieter river scene before heading back for a brief but reverent afternoon visit.
