Curator's note

Red Fort, the sandstone leviathan that dominates Chandni Chowk’s chaotic heart, is the only Delhi monument that feels both inevitable and overrated, depending on your patience for crowds and heat. Aim to reach the Lahori Gate at 0800 hrs in November–February; the early fog over the Yamuna softens the Mughal silhouette and the ticket line is tolerable. Hire a guide at the gate – the Rajasthani‑accented narrators who punctuate each arch with anecdotes about Shah Jahan’s wine‑soaked soirées are worth the ₹200 fee, otherwise you’ll miss the hidden baoli at the western wall and the intricate pietra dura in the Diwan-i‑Khas. Inside, bypass the perfunctory audio‑guide and focus on the massive marble throne room and the Hall of Mirrors; the latter still shivers with the echo of imperial court gossip. Pack a bottle of chilled lemonade and a hand‑fan; the courtyards become a sauna by noon, and the souvenir stalls selling "authentic" marble inlay kits turn the experience into a half‑hour bargaining exercise. Leave the afternoon for a chaat break at Karim’s across the street – the kebabs there are the only justification for the trek. If you only have a day, skip the Sino‑Mughal Museum on the north side and head straight to the bustling bazaars; they capture the fort’s original purpose as a gateway to a city that never sleeps.
