Datia’s Satkhanda Palace, perched about 75 km north of Gwalior on the crumbling Spice Route of Bundelkhand, is a seven‑storey curiosity that never saw a royal footstep. Built in the mid‑17th century by Maharaja Bir Singh Deo, the red‑sandstone monolith stretches roughly 80 metres in each direction, its jagged silhouette dominating the barren plain like a squat citadel. The only respectable way to experience it is at sunrise, when the low light teases the faded frescoes on the second floor’s Hall of Mirrors and the staircases—so steep they feel like a climb up a temple—are less oppressive. Skip the late‑afternoon crowds that swarm the base for cheap photographs; the interior is a maze of empty chambers, a reminder that the palace was never inhabited, and the lack of furnishings makes every echo feel like a warning. Stay the night in the modest guesthouse at Datia Fort, then swap a morning tea for a quick bus back to Gwalior before the heat of May‑June turns the stone walls into an oven.
