Curator's note

Darjeeling Falls, the 80‑metre cascade that tumbles into a surprisingly clear plunge pool, is the kind of half‑day detour that feels like a secret for those who time it right. Get there by 10 am on a clear weekday in March or early November – the mist is low enough to see the river’s turquoise sheen, the crowds are still thin, and the sun is already warming the flat stone steps that lead from the tea‑garden road near Ghoom. The best perch is the wooden bench under the old tea‑plantation guard‑room at the far side of the pool; it lets you watch the water roar while the temperature dips to a refreshing 12 °C – perfect for a quick dip if you don’t mind a splash of tea‑garden grime. Skip the “photo‑stop” at the viewpoint near the tea‑shop, where tourists line up for a forced‑smile shot and the view is blocked by a new souvenir stall. Instead, follow the narrow trail past the tea‑brick house to the lower bank where locals launch bamboo rafts; here you can wade in, watch the trout dart, and hear the distant call of a Himalayan black‑capped. Stay in the heritage guesthouse on Batasia Road for easy access, and don’t linger past 2 pm – the sun turns the pool into a steaming cauldron and the crowds swell as school trips arrive.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
