Curator's note

Darjeeling railway station, code DJ, sits at a smug 2,073 metres on the UNESCO‑listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a narrow‑gauge relic that shuttles tourists from New Jalpaiguri to the hilltop in a rattling six‑hour saga of bamboo bridges and spiralling loops. The station itself is a colonial‑era brick box tucked behind Chowrasta, where the only scenic diversion is a tea‑stall serving buttery croissants and masala chai at 6 a.m. before the first toy train coughs out of the depot. Arrive by 5:30 am if you want a seat on the 6:00 departure; the later services are either sold out or plagued by delays because the line is a living museum and a working railway in equal measure. The ride is beautiful enough to justify the cramped wooden bench, but the station’s charm ends at the ticket counter—overpriced souvenirs and a permanent queue for the “photo‑op” with the brass locomotive. Skip the afternoon train unless you’re intent on a meandering return through the mist; a morning ascent gives you daylight for tea estates, while the evening descent is cramped and often canceled by fog. The best base is a guesthouse on Observatory Hill, where you can hear the locomotive’s whistle without the tourist chatter of the Bazaar. Visit between October and March for clear skies; monsoon months turn the track into a mud‑sodden slog and the station into a soggy waiting room.
