Curator's note

Civilisation VI: Rise and Fall is the first expansion to the 2016 grand‑strategy juggernaut and, despite its lofty claim to “bring history alive,” feels more like a massive patch you have to download before the base game stops feeling stale. Dropped on 8 February 2018, the add‑on tacks on a thirteenth‑generation of leaders – from Seondeok of Silla to Genghis Khan – plus the long‑awaited districts of the Government Plaza and the Emergency system that pretends the world is on the brink of collapse every few turns. In practice the new “Age” mechanic makes your empire wobble like a rickety bus on a pothole‑strewn Delhi street; you’ll find yourself celebrating a Golden Age just as a surprise natural disaster – a Flood, a Drought, a Volcanic Eruption – smacks you into a Dark Age, forcing the dreaded “loyalty‑drain” that turns your once‑flourishing city into a rebellious fringe. The cinematic map‑reveal when the Sun Unleashed (aka Engine Collapse) hits is impressive, yet the novelty wears off after roughly three sessions. If your only reason for installing is the extra civs, you’re better off waiting for the free “Gathering Storm” patch that ships them for free. Two‑hour playthroughs are honest; a weekend binge is the only way to taste the full swing of sudden‑collapse drama, but be prepared for a learning curve that rivals learning Delhi’s traffic patterns. Avoid playing on a cracked hard‑drive – the expansion is notorious for corrupt saves. In short, rise and fall is a decent polish if you already love Civ VI, but it isn’t the revelation the marketing hype pretends it is.
