Skip the souvenir‑laden café on the inner balcony unless you fancy a lukewarm masala chai for a few rupees; the palace’s own restaurant, Suvarna Mahal, is overrated and pricey. A quick lunch at the nearby LMB in Johari Bazaar beats the palace canteen hands down. Two hours is honest; three lets you wander the courtyards and watch the royal family’s 500 servants move about – an oddly dignified spectacle. Visit between October and March, avoid the monsoon’s soggy heat, and stay at a heritage guesthouse on Bapu Bazar for a short walk back to the main gate.
