Curator's note

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, tucked into the sleepy ruins of Old Goa just a half‑hour’s drive north of Panaji, is the sort of 16th‑century baroque flash that will make you feel both privileged and mildly annoyed that you’ve seen it on every guidebook cover. Built between 1544 and 1547, the modest façade hides a surprisingly intact nave, a gilded altarpiece and a set of Portuguese‑carved confessionals that rival any Lisbon parish; it is part of the UNESCO‑listed churches and convents ensemble, so you’ll be tripping over placards as often as candles. Go early – any time before 9 am on a weekday – to avoid the throng of school groups and the midday heat that makes the stone floor feel like a griddle. Skip the “tourist‑aimed” audio guide; a quick glance at the side altar of St Francis Xavier and you’ll have the gist, and the real charm lies in the silent courtyard where locals feed pigeons while the scent of incense drifts from the adjacent cloister. Stay in the heritage hotel Casa De Goa or a budget guesthouse in Panaji’s Fontainhas – the short rickety bus ride is part of the adventure, and the night‑time illumination of the church’s bell tower is worth the extra kilometre. November to February is the only window when the monsoon won’t turn the access road into a mudslide, and two hours is an honest allocation; any longer risks staring at the same marble columns while the world outside rushes on.
