Curator's note

Chovvanur Burial Cave, tucked in the palm‑fringed hills of Chowannur near the backwaters of Thrissur, is a pre‑historic oddity that deserves a half‑day detour only if you’re already roaming central Kerala. The rock‑cut chamber, a perfect circle hewn from laterite, opens through a single, low‑slung entry that forces you to stoop like an ancient rite‑participant; inside, two stone benches sit like the world's most austere dining room. The site is officially a centrally protected monument, so you’ll find a modest ASI plaque but no guiding staff, and the surrounding paddy fields are more atmospheric than informative. Access is easiest by hiring a rickshaw from the nearby Chowannur bus stop and flagging down a local farmer who knows the path – the road is a dusty, wind‑blown lane that disappears into jungle scrub. Visit in the cooler months of November to February; the monsoon turns the trail into a slip‑n‑slide, and the summer heat makes the stone walls uncomfortably warm. Skip the souvenir stalls that have sprung up on the periphery – there’s nothing to buy but a few chipped pebbles. Pair the cave with a stop at the nearby Vadakkumpuram Shiva temple for a quick lunch of appam and fish curry, then head back to Thrissur for a more reliable cultural fix. Two hours is honest; any longer feels like an homage to boredom.
