Curator's note

Chiraan Fort Palace, tucked behind the bustle of Begumpet Road and the noisy traffic of Gachibowli, is the Paigah’s answer to a Victorian salon – grand, slightly gaudy, and forever eclipsed by the more photogenic Falaknuma. Built in 1880 by Sir Viqar‑ul‑Umra, the palace’s façade is a stuccoed mash of Indo‑Saracenic arches and a misplaced Italianate balcony that looks better on postcards than in person; the real treasure lies inside, where the marble staircase in the Aiwan‑i Begumpet still echoes the thrum of aristocratic intrigue. A quick detour from the modern office parks will land you at the modest courtyards where the original teak doors, now varnished to a dull sheen, guard a collection of brassware that rivals any museum’s loot. The best time to visit is early morning, before the mid‑day sun bleaches the frescoes and the security guards doze, and you’ll catch the occasional guide – a retired Paigah clerk – who will whisper about the family’s rivalry with the Nizams without the usual tourist fluff. Skip the guided tours that charge ₹500 for a half‑hour and instead pay the modest ₹50 entry; the only real disappointment is the lack of a café, so bring chai from nearby Café Niloufer. Two hours is honest for the palace itself, but allow an extra half‑day if you wish to wander the adjoining Devdi Nazir Nawaz Jung complex, where the crumbling garden walls still hint at the opulence that once rivalled the Nizam’s own. Best visited between October and February, when the Deccan heat is bearable and the crowds are confined to the Falaknuma crowd‑pullers.
