Chennai Fort 3

A hilltop fort, ramparts wide enough for elephants.

Curator's note

Chennai Fort, perched on the modest rise of Fort St. George in George Town, is the city’s only reminder that the British once thought a hill was needed to stop an elephant‑laden army; the massive brick ramparts still stretch wide enough for a dozen elephants to march side‑by‑side, though today they mostly corral traffic and stray dogs. Arrive at sunrise, when the low light turns the ochre walls a soft gold and the early crowd is limited to joggers and the occasional heritage‑photographer; the beat of the nearby Marina Beach waves provides a surprisingly soothing soundtrack to the otherwise humming traffic. The best view of the original 1680s gate is from the stair‑tiled courtyard of the St. Mary’s Church, where a cup of filter coffee at the small stall on Ritchie Road will keep you awake for the 15‑minute guided walk that explains the cannon‑ball‑scarred bastions, the old jail block and the flamboyant façade of the Secretariat. Skip the interior museum unless you’re a die‑hard colonial buff – the exhibits are cramped, dimly lit and heavily narrated, and you can get the same history from the audio guide at the main gate. The fort’s periphery is a parking nightmare after 10 am, so park at the adjoining Government Estate lane and walk the 10‑minute promenade; a late afternoon visit is worthwhile for the cool breeze and the occasional street‑food cart selling sundal, but avoid the monsoon months of October‑December when the high tide floods the lower courtyard and makes the stone steps dangerously slick. A night‑time stroll is permissible but the gates close at 6 pm, so plan to exit well before sunset.
