Curator's note

Charminar, the four‑towered tinderbox that dominates Hyderabad’s old city, is a compulsory photo‑stop, but treat it as a waypoint, not a day‑long pilgrimage. Arrive around 8 am, when the crowd is still thin enough to glimpse the 1591 mosque on the roof and the delicate stucco work without fighting a human tide; by mid‑morning the jaws of Laad Bazaar – the glittering lane of bangles, lacquered pearls and cheap souvenir‑casing – will have you in a chokehold. Grab a steaming plate of keema fry or a half‑hour‑old biryani from Shah Ghouse on the opposite side of Mecca Masjid, then slurp Irani chai at Nimrah Café, where the tea is as thick as the city’s traffic. The surrounding lanes (Murgi Chowk, Shahi Bazaar) are a sensory overload of incense, grinding spices and the occasional stray monkey, so keep a bottle of water and a sturdy strap for your bag. If you’re only in town for a night, skip the perfunctory “light‑and‑sound” show at sunset – it’s a tourist gimmick that adds little to the historic gravitas. The best months are November to February; the pre‑monsoon heat of May‑June can turn the open courtyard into a furnace, and the monsoon itself makes the stone slick and the bazaars soggy. Stay in a heritage guesthouse in the nearby Banjara Hills for a quiet retreat, and allocate just a couple of hours to the monument itself; the surrounding markets will eat the rest of your schedule.
