Curator's note

Char Chinar is the four‑tree postcard that tourists cling to while the rest of Dal Lake slouches under a veil of fog and motorised shikaras. The island sits in the Lakut Dal, opposite the bustling Nigeen shore, and can be reached by a 10‑minute hel‑row from the Hazratbal jetty; skip the overpriced “heritage” tours and hail an independent shikara at Harwan for a fraction of the cost, but be prepared to haggle over the rower’s fee and the inevitable extra charge for “photo‑stop” time. Arrive at high tide, preferably in early September when the chinars blaze orange and the water is still clear enough to see the crumbling Mughal‑era stone steps that lead to the centre platform – a half‑built gazebo that is more romantic ruin than polished museum. The real draw is the stillness: sit on the low wooden bench, sip a steaming cup of Kashmiri kahwa, and watch the sunrise paint the lake gold before the crowds trundle in for the usual Instagram drill. Avoid the monsoon months (July–August) when the lake swells and the island is almost submerged, and steer clear of the October‑November rush if you value solitude over souvenir‑snapping. Stay the night in a heritage house in the old City’s Aali Masjid lane; the quiet after the shikara docks is the only time you’ll hear the lake breathe.
