Curator's note

Chandrawati Jain temple, perched in the dust‑kissed hamlet 23 km north of Varanasi on the Varanasi–Lumbini road, is the only stone‑cobbled claim to fame for a place that otherwise feels like a roadside lay‑by. It is revered as the birthplace of Chandraprabha, the eighth Tirthankara, so the modest complex is swarmed by saffron‑clad pilgrims each Saturday and on full‑moon evenings; the main hall houses a 2‑metre marble idol of the ascetic, flanked by a mildewed wall of ancient inscriptions that are more interesting to epigraphists than to casual tourists. Arrive before dawn to catch the thin veil of mist that softens the red‑brick walls, then head straight to the small dhaba opposite the temple for a plate of aloo‑paratha with dollops of ghee – it is the only decent food you’ll find within a kilometre. Skip the over‑commercial souvenir stalls at the entrance; they are nothing more than blank‑canvas trinkets sold by vendors who’d rather be at the Ganges. The nearest decent lodging is a budget guesthouse in the village of Bhelsar, a 10‑minute rickshaw ride away; otherwise, base yourself in Varanasi and make a half‑day excursion, allowing time for the inevitable traffic on the highway. Visit between October and March to avoid the scorching heat that turns the plain into a tarmac oven; the monsoon makes the unpaved path to the shrine slippery and the stone steps treacherous. Two hours is honest, four lets you linger for the quiet evening aarti that the local mahants perform with unhurried devotion.
