Curator's note

Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary, tucked into the undulating Khurdha uplands just south of Cuttack, is the sort of wildlife‑reserve that whispers rather than shouts; it rewards patience more than a packed itinerary. The only realistic way to see the resident herd is a pre‑dawn jeep safari from the Forest Department gate on N. S. P. Road, where you’ll need a permit (₹150 for Indian nationals, advance booking via the Cuttack WR office). The forest’s 175 km² of mixed deciduous scrub and low hillocks are most alive between October and February, when the monsoon has drained the streams and the temperature hovers in the low‑20s; avoid the April–June scorch, when elephants recede to waterholes and the roads become dust‑bowls. A half‑day trek along the Dhananagar–Mahanadi ridge trail lets you spot lesser‑known birds such as the orange‑billed babbler, but bring sturdy boots and a mosquito net — the forest is a breeding ground for both. Stay the night in a modest guesthouse on Cuttack’s Barabati‑Road; the city’s rail hub makes arrival easy, and you’ll be within an hour’s drive of both Chandaka and the better‑served Nandankanan Zoo, a sensible fallback if the sanctuary’s limited safari slots leave you waiting. Two days is honest if you want both a morning drive and an afternoon walk; anything less feels like a rushed postcard, and the occasional “elephant‑spotting” bus tour is overrated, offering nothing beyond a noisy, window‑squinting glimpse of a herd that would rather be ignored.
