Chabimura

Chabimura also known as Chakwrakma or Chakrakma is famous for its panels of rock carving on steep mountain wall on the bank of Gomati river in Indian state Tripura. There are huge carved images of Shiva, Vishnu, Kartika, Mahisasura Mardini Durga and other Gods and Goddesses.

Curator's note

Chabimura, perched on the sheer basalt wall above the Gomati in Tripura’s Gomati district, is the sort of adrenaline‑infused pilgrimage that makes you forget the state’s reputation for tea‑plantation quiet. The rock‑cut tableau—Shiva’s cosmic dance, a stoic Vishnu, a fierce Kartikeya, and Durga trampling Mahishasura—spans the cliff face like an ancient billboard, best viewed from a boat at low tide or from the modest viewpoint on the right bank near the Chaibasa bridge. The path to the overlook is a rickety, mud‑caked trail that rewards the fit with a panoramic sweep of the river’s emerald bend; a local guide with a machete will clear the way and point out the faded 12th‑century inscriptions. Stay the night in the government guesthouse at Chabimura or, if you prefer comfort, the modest Eco‑Lodge in nearby Guwahati. Arrive in the cool months of October to February; monsoon torrents will wash away visibility, and the summer heat makes the trek a slog. Skip the over‑promoted “photo‑ops” that charge for a “guided boat” that merely lingers for a few seconds—timing your own sunrise boat is free and far more atmospheric. Two days is honest: one for the trek and temple and another for a quiet river walk and a late‑night tea at the guesthouse’s modest tea stall.
