Curator's note

Meghalaya’s caves are a spelunk‑spector’s wet dream and a stamina test for anyone who expects comfort, so arrive with a guide and a sense that muck will be your constant companion. The crown jewel is Krem Liat Prah in the Jaintia Hills – at 30.9 km it stretches longer than a marathon and demands at least two full days of ropework, headlamps and a reliable porter; book through the local Meghalaya Adventure Club in Shillong and sleep in the modest guesthouse at Mawphlang to shave off travel time. For a shorter, still impressive fix, tackle Mawsmai Cave near Cherrapunji (the “flood‑gate of India”) where the limestone curtains are photogenic but the tourist throng in July‑September makes the drip‑drip ambience feel contrived – aim for the shoulder months of October to February when the mist has retreated and the interior stays cool. Siju, dubbed the “Grand Canyon of underground,” offers a 4 km loop that is manageable in a day but requires sturdy boots; the nearest accommodation is a basic lodge in Jowai, though the road is a pothole‑riddled nightmare after the monsoon. Skip the “longest‑cave‑in‑India” bragboards at the state museum unless you’ve already done the kilometres underground – they add little to the experience. Remember that the Khasi word “krem” simply means cave, so don’t be fooled by the romantic signage; these are working geological systems, not photo‑ops, and the only reliable Wi‑Fi you’ll find is the one you bring in a pocket‑size satellite hotspot.
