Curator's note

Mahabalipuram is a limestone tableau that feels less like a heritage site and more like a set‑piece for a history‑channel reel; the Shore Temple at sunrise, its sea‑worn towers silhouetted against the Bay of Bengal, is the only justified photo‑op, but the real draw is the pan‑Indian stone‑carving spree that sprawls along the 1 km of shoreline. Drop into the open‑air museum early – 6 am at the Five Rathas (Malaikottai) before the tour buses arrive, then saunter past Arjuna’s Pillar and Krishna’s Mandapa, where the bas‑relief “Descent of the Ganga” (Olakkai) still looks like a pre‑industrial movie set. The town itself is a low‑rise sprawl of guesthouses on East Coast Road; stay at a family‑run inn on the Main Beach Road for easy access to the monuments and the modest seafood shacks that serve pepper‑spiced fish fry and sundal (spiced chickpea salad). Two days is honest: Day 1 for the Shore Temple and adjacent mandapas, Day 2 for the rock‑cut cave temples and the fish‑market in the early afternoon. Skip the commercial beach; the sand is crowded and the water is a murky brown. Best visited between October and February when the humidity drops and the sea breeze keeps the heat tolerable; avoid the monsoon months (July–September) as the limestone erodes painfully and many inland routes to the site flood.
