Curator's note

Carmelagiri Elephant Park sits on the outskirts of Munnar, tucked behind the tea estates of Chappath, and promises a “safari” that is more about photo‑ops than wilderness. The only non‑negotiable here is the 30‑minute elephant trek along the winding, mist‑clad paths that loop past cardamom plantations and a single, overgrown bamboo grove; it starts at 9 a.m. sharp, when the air is still cool enough not to melt the rubber on the saddles. Book through the on‑site office – online reservations are a myth – and be prepared to pay Rs 1,500 per adult for a bare‑bones ride that includes a rushed tea‑break at the park’s makeshift café, where the only highlight is a steaming cup of masala chai that tastes like it was boiled in a rusted kettle. The park’s elephant welfare record is murky; the animals are chained overnight and the mahouts look more like part‑time labourers than trained keepers, so consider a short trek to the nearby Anamudi Peak viewpoint or a tea‑factory tour at Kannan Devan as a more ethical way to soak up the high‑range scenery. Stay the night in Munnar town – the modest rooms on Top Station Road give you easy access to the market and the cooler evenings – and avoid the monsoon months of June to August, when the paths turn into leaky mud and the rides are cancelled without warning. Two hours is honest for the whole experience; anything longer is just waiting for the next group of tourists to file in.
