Curator's note

The brown‑winged kingfisher (Halcyon superciliaris) is one of those avian gems that will make you question whether you’ve ever actually been to India, because spotting it feels like finding a single green‑blue marble in a sack of pebbles. Its strong, rattling call is heard most reliably in the riparian corridors of the Western Ghats – think the mist‑shrouded banks of the Bhavani near Mettupalayam, the forest‑lined banks of the Kabini in Karnataka, or the tea‑plantation edges of Munnar at dawn. It also frequents the mangroves of Sundarbans and the low‑land forests of Assam’s Kaziranga, where it perches on low branches before darting for dragonflies over sluggish water. The bird’s unmistakable brown‑winged flash, contrasted with a bright orange belly, is best seen in the early hours when the sun is low and the insect rush is at its peak; bring a pair of binoculars and a field guide, but be prepared for the humidity to cling to lenses like a second skin. Stay in a modest homestay or forest lodge near the water’s edge – the premium is in proximity, not luxury – and skip the night‑time “safari” drives that mostly feature barking deer and mosquito clouds. Late October to early March is the window when the monsoon‑driven insects are abundant and the foliage is thin enough to give you a clear line of sight. If you’re on a broader birding itinerary, slot the kingfisher between a morning trek in Bandipur and an afternoon of boat‑watching in the backwaters of Kerala; the trade‑off is a few extra kilometres on the road for a burst of colour that most tourists will never notice.
