Brooke Bond
Brooke Bond is a brand of tea owned by Lipton Teas and Infusions, except in India, Nepal, and Indonesia where it is owned by Unilever. Brooke Bond was formerly an independent tea-trading and manufacturing company in the United Kingdom, known for its PG Tips brand and its Brook…
Brooke Bond isn’t a monument you’ll find on any heritage trail, but for anyone with a modicum of curiosity about India’s tea empire the old Lipton‑owned headquarters on Dadar’s Lala Lajpat Rai Road is worth a brief detour. The red‑brick façade, dating from the 1940s, still houses a working blending floor where the familiar PG Tips packets are mixed with the robust Assam you’ll find in every roadside stall. Pop in around 10 a.m. on a weekday and you can watch the clatter of tin‑lined bins and the hum of a century‑old roller‑grinder; the staff are surprisingly tolerant of visitors, though a polite “Namaste” and a nod to the security guard will smooth the way. The on‑site museum, a cramped backroom packed with vintage tea cards, is the only thing that feels slightly curated – the glossy propaganda of the 1950s is both nostalgic and a reminder of colonial advertising. Skip the souvenir shop; the branded mugs are overpriced and the tea sachets you can buy elsewhere for a fraction. If you’re in Mumbai for more than a day, combine this stop with a walk through the nearby Shivaji Park market for fresh vada pav and you’ll understand why the city’s love affair with tea runs deeper than its Bollywood gossip. (Best visited between November and February when the monsoon‑soaked streets are bearable.)
