Curator's note

Mehsana’s Boter Kothani Vav, a 1674 step‑well tucked behind the modest bus depot on Navjivan Road, is the kind of off‑beat relic that rewards a spare afternoon more than a packed itinerary. Descend the twenty‑odd stone steps past the ornate lintel bearing the date 1674 and a now‑faded Gujarati inscription; the water‑tank, refurbished in 2025, still catches the monsoon swell, but the trickle in the dry months is more poetic than practical. The real draw is the symmetry of the twelve arched alcoves, each lined with faintly carved motifs of lotus and peacock – a photographer’s quiet joy, provided you resist the urge to flood the frame with tourists on motorbikes. Skip the surrounding market stalls if you crave stillness; they’re louder than the well’s echoing sighs. Stay at the nearby Heritage Guesthouse on Anand Plaza for easy access and a roof‑top view of the Vav at sunset, when the stone glows amber. Visit between October and February: the heat is merciful and the rain‑filled pool shimmers, making the effort of the climb feel justified. Two hours is enough to soak in the atmosphere; lingering longer turns contemplation into boredom.
