Curator's note

Borra Caves, perched at 705 m in the limestone hills above Araku, are the deepest karst system in India and deserve a slot on any off‑beat itinerary, but only if you tolerate a three‑hour, serpentine drive from Visakhapatnam and can stomach a midday heat‑wave; the most forgiving window is October to March when the mist clings to the jagged stalactites and the temperature stays below 25 °C. Book a night in Araku’s modest eco‑lodges – the Treehouse Resort on the railway line or the budget‑friendly Ananthagiri Guesthouse – and rise early to catch the morning bus to the caves; the entry fee (≈₹300) includes a brief, crammed audio guide, but the real treasure is the “Megalithic Hall”, a cavernous dome where massive, irregular speleothems loom like the ribs of a giant’s abdomen, a literal nod to the Telugu name Borrā Guhalu. Skip the glossy souvenirs at the roadside stalls; they’re cheap plasticky replicas of the formations you can photograph better from the designated viewing decks. The site is commercialised enough that a guide appears every ten minutes, but hiring him is worth the extra ₹200 for the extra context on prehistoric shell‑bearing sediment and the myth that the caves were once a tiger’s den. Don’t linger after 3 pm – the interior gets damp and the exit route winds into a dim, unlit tunnel that feels more like a horror set than a tourist attraction. If you have a spare day, pair the visit with a ride on the historic Araku‑Visakhapatnam narrow‑gauge line; the scenery is far more memorable than the caves themselves.
