Curator's note

July is the only month when Bor Tiger Reserve actually feels like a sanctuary rather than a sweltering swamp, and even then you’ll need a sturdy raincoat and a grim determination to stay awake during the endless drizzle. The terrain is a tangled mix of teak‑covered hills and the verdant floodplain of the Bor Dam, so set base at the modest government forest lodge near Hingani; private bungalows are a waste of money and too far from the best trails. Start early on day one with a guided trek to the watchtower at Khoda Peh, where the mist lifts just enough to glimpse a tiger prowling the scrub at dawn – if you’re lucky; otherwise expect gaurs, sambar and a cacophony of birdcalls that make the rain seem melodious. The real draw is the night safari from 21:30 to midnight; the forest comes alive with leopards, barking deer and the occasional sloth bear, but be prepared for smoky diesel fumes and a guide who will repeat “stay quiet” every five minutes. Skip the souvenir stalls at the entrance – they sell cheap plastic figurines and overpriced chai. July also brings the annual Bor Festival, a noisy affair that crowds the main gates; outsiders are better off staying in Wardha town and taking the 30‑minute drive at sunrise. Two days is honest; three lets you linger at the dam’s bird‑watching platform and soak in the quiet after the crowds disperse.
