Curator's note

Bodh Gaya rewards patience more than polish. The Mahabodhi Temple, with its towering gilded spire, is the only non‑negotiable – arrive at sunrise for the chanting, when the monks’ low hum competes with traffic on the adjoining Bhumipur Road. Slip through the saffron‑clad crowds to the ancient Bodhi Tree; the pilgrim’s plaque on its trunk is a better photo backdrop than the polished signboards. Beyond the main complex, the 100‑foot high Great Buddha statue at the Global Vipassana Pagoda is photogenic but overrated – a quick glance and you’re back to the narrow lane of the Monastery Market, where you can haggle for saffron‑tinted alms‑bowls and thukpa from a stall that smells of cardamom. Stay in a modest guesthouse on the Strand Road; the riverside rooms are cheap, clean, and you’ll hear the Ganges sigh at night. Avoid October‑November monsoons; the mud‑slick streets turn the whole site into a soggy maze. Three days lets you attend an evening dharma talk, a half‑day visit to the nearby ancient ruins at Sarnath (by a shaky bus), and a quiet morning meditation under the tree. Skip the packaged “Buddhist circuit” tours – they waste time and money on souvenir stalls.
