Curator's note

Bhopal Falls 2, the lesser‑known cascade on the upper reaches of the Upper Lake, is worth a detour if you have the stamina to wander beyond the municipal promenade, but only in the cooler months – October to early March – when the monsoon-fed rush is still vigorous yet the air stays under twenty degrees. The 80‑metre plunge creates a surprisingly calm plunge pool that is safe for a dip only until about 11 am; after that the sun heats the water to an unnerving 28 °C and the crowds of school trips turn the spot into a noisy selfie‑station. The best way to experience it is to arrive via the narrow service road off PV Road, park at the broken‑down tea stall on the left, then scramble down the loose stone steps to the rock‑shelf that juts over the fall – bring a water‑proof backpack and a towel, because there are no changing facilities. Skip the advertised “guided boat ride” that circles the lake; the view from the shore is far more intimate, and the boat operators tend to overcharge tourists with a forced souvenir stop at a garish tea‑shop. Stay in the nearby Shyamla Hills guesthouse for a night; the early‑morning mist over the falls is worth the extra kilometre of travel.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
