Curator's note

Belum Caves, tucked into the dry scrub of Nandyala, are the sort of geological outlier that trips you up if you expect a temple‑filled itinerary. The 3.2 km labyrinth, the second‑largest on the subcontinent after Meghalaya’s Krem Liat Prah, is best tackled with a guide from the Andhra tourism office – the routes are poorly signposted and the Siphon‑gate can leave clueless visitors stranded in waist‑deep water. Aim for the cooler months; November to February keeps the underground humidity bearable and the outside heat from turning the entrance into a mirage. Arrive early, before the school groups flood the queue at the ticket office, and ask for the “Pataalaganga” stretch, the deepest chamber where the stalactites hang like liquid chandeliers and the drip‑water pools echo with a faint, eerie hum. Skip the souvenir shop on the surface – the plastic lamps and cardboard postcards add nothing to the limestone grandeur – and instead bring a torch with spare batteries; the official floodlights are dim and flicker like cheap cinema. Stay the night in Giddaluru, a modest town a half‑hour’s drive away, where budget guesthouses are clean and the biryanis are spicier than the cave air. Two hours inside satisfies most curiosities; add a third if you fancy lingering over the natural acoustic of the “Echo Hall” before the guide leads you back to daylight.
