Curator's note

Bava Pyara is the least‑talked‑about stop in the Junagadh Buddhist cave complex, tucked away on the eastern fringe of the city where the alkaline soil still smells of monsoon. The shrines here are a chaotic mash‑up of early‑Mahāsāṃghika Buddhist cellas and crudely carved Jain tirthankaras, proof that Gujarat flipped religious loyalties like a coin. The entrance, a low, moss‑slicked arch on the roadside of State Highway 25, leads straight into a dimly lit passage where you must duck under a broken lintel before the first vihara opens onto a plain marble platform – the kind of space that would make a minimalist feel comfortable. In the central chamber you’ll spot a faded dharmachakra on the north wall, flanked by a half‑finished Jain yaksha that looks as if the sculptor ran out of marble. There is no guide‑post, no ticket office, and the site is unlit after sunset, so bring a headlamp and a patience for dust. The best time to visit is the cooler months of November to February; monsoon floods can make the access road treacherous, while the summer heat turns the interior into a sauna. Skip the “heritage walk” tours that bundle Bava Pyara with the more impressive Uparkot Fort – the caves are best experienced alone, with a sketchbook and an appetite for unpolished history. A modest room in the old town’s Patel‑Baug lane offers basic amenities and a convenient base for an afternoon of wandering.
