Curator's note

Bannerghatta National Park is the only place on the outskirts of Bengaluru where you can trade the city’s traffic for a three‑hour safari that feels more like a theme‑park drive than a wilderness experience; the elephant‑back ride and the big‑cat enclosure are engineered for Instagram, not authenticity, so bring a sense of humour and a short‑stop for the souvenir shop. The real payoff lies in the early‑morning safari at 08:30 hrs, when the two‑hour 15‑kilometre loop on the needs‑based, open‑top bus offers a decent chance of spotting a lone leopard or a shy dhole, especially in the cooler months of November to February when the scrub is not soggy and the drivers aren’t fighting mud. The adjoining Bannerghatta Biological Park, opened in 2002, houses a modest zoo and a surprisingly lush butterfly garden—good for a quick breather but not worth a full day unless you have small children. Skip the midnight “night safari” unless you enjoy paying extra for a dimly‑lit drive with jeering tour guides. Base yourself in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar or BTM Layout; the 30‑kilometre stretch of Bannerghatta Road is a traffic nightmare after 17:00, so plan to leave the city by 06:00 and return after 14:00. Monsoon (June–August) turns the trails into mud‑pools, making the safari an uncomfortable slog, while summer heat (April–May) leaves you sweating in the bus. Two days in Bengaluru plus a sunrise‑to‑noon slot at Bannerghatta is a realistic itinerary; anything longer is unnecessary unless you’re a die‑hard wildlife enthusiast willing to book a private jeep guide.
