Auli National Park

National park; tigers if you are very, very lucky.

Curator's note

Auli National Park sits on the ragged edge of Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalaya, and unless you’re prepared to trade Wi‑Fi for wind‑blown pine, you’ll find it more a wild‑life tease than a tiger‑spotting triumph. The only realistic chance of catching a Bengal tiger is in the deepest winter, when the snow masks their tracks and the park’s rangers go on patrol – even then you’re more likely to see a stray yak than a prowling cat. The sensible itinerary is a two‑day base at Garhwal’s modest tea‑house in Joshimath, then a pre‑dawn trek to the 3,500‑metre ridge of Gorson Bugyal; the early light paints the alpine meadows and the mist lifts just enough to reveal the occasional Himalayan musk deer. Stick to the marked trail through Gorson and avoid the poorly‑marked spur toward the Gopal Tibba viewpoint – it’s a shortcut that ends in a dead‑end of loose scree and a steep drop that has claimed more than one over‑eager Instagrammer. Late September to early November offers the clearest skies and a tolerable chill; July‑August brings monsoon‑driven leeches and impassable mud. Skip the “tiger‑safari” tours advertised by Delhi agents – they’re a bait for naïve travellers and a waste of both time and the park’s fragile ecosystem.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
