Curator's note

The Archaeological Museum and Portrait Gallery, tucked behind the ruins of the Sé Cathedral in Old Goa, is the kind of place that rewards a half‑day of spare curiosity more than a rush‑hour checklist. Opened in 1964 and reshuffled under the Archaeological Survey of India in the early 1980s, the modest two‑storey complex houses a jumbled but surprisingly coherent collage of Portuguese relics, Hindu artefacts salvaged from nearby temples, and a cramped portrait gallery of colonial officials whose stiff smiles hardly disguise their imperial swagger. Start at the lower floor at 10 am to beat the mid‑day heat that seeps through the thin walls, and linger over the 16th‑century silver chalice from the Church of St‑Clement, the brass cannon that once guarded the Mandovi, and the early ivory carvings that hint at Goa’s pre‑colonial trade routes. The portrait room on the mezzanine is best viewed in the late afternoon when the slatted windows filter a soft amber light onto the oil‑on‑canvas consuls; the lighting also softens the inevitable haze of dust that clings to the wooden floorboards. Skip the guided audio tour – the commentary is more bureaucratic than enlightening – and instead read the simple captions; they are succinct enough to let you form your own narrative. Admission is Rs 30, and the museum is closed on Tuesdays, so plan a Monday or Wednesday visit to avoid both the weekend crowds and the occasional school trip. A short walk south along the riverbank brings you to the Basilica of Bom Jesus, so combine the two if you have a full morning; otherwise, treat the museum as a quiet interlude between the more flamboyant churches of Old Goa.
