Aravankadu (AVK) is a forgettable speck on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, perched between Coonoor and Ooty and barely worth a glance unless you’re already on the UNESCO‑listed steam line. The platform is a narrow concrete slab with a rusted sign, a single ticket window that half‑opens for the occasional tourist, and a bench that creaks under the weight of a lone chai‑stained traveller. Arrive at 09:00 am for the heritage Darjeeling‑type locomotive – the thin smoke and the clatter of the rack‑and‑pinion are the only attractions, and even those fade once you step off at the next stop. The surrounding hamlet of Aruvankadu is a pine‑shrouded former tea estate; there are no eateries beyond a roadside stall selling idly and sambar, and the view of the valley is blocked by a cluster of tea‑factory roofs. If you want a genuine Nilgiri experience, skip the station and alight at Coonoor for Sim’s Park or at Ooty for Botanical Gardens; both have far more to offer and better food. Travel in the dry months (January to March) to avoid the monsoon landslips that can halt the train for hours, and stay in budget guesthouses in Coonoor rather than trying to find accommodation in Aravankadu – there is none.
