Curator's note

Anangpur, tucked into the scrubby outskirts of Faridabad, is the unsung footnote to Delhi’s famed Mehrauli‑Tughlaqabad triangle, and the only place where you can actually point at a ruined Tomar fort and say you’re standing where a 10th‑century king once claimed capital status. The stone enclosure on the Delhi‑Faridabad road (just off the Mathura Expressway, turn left at the old Anangpur grain market) is a low‑key affair: crumbling walls, a few weather‑worn pillars and the occasional dhoti‑clad farmer tending goats on the ramparts. The real draw is the cluster of 12th‑century temples hidden in the scrub, especially the modest but surprisingly ornate Suraj Kund temple, which still hosts a morning puja at 7 am — be punctual or you’ll miss the only moment the place feels lived‑in. Stay in a budget guesthouse in Sector 4, Faridabad, or, if you’re driving from Delhi, park at the Anangpur rest‑stop and make a quick half‑day trek; two hours of wandering will give you the fort, the temples and the view of the ancient ridge that frames the modern monoliths of Gurgaon. Skip the hasty “photo‑stop” rush of Mehrauli; here the quiet is the attraction, and the heat of May‑June will melt the stone and your patience, so aim for October to March, when the air is cool enough to hear the distant call of a koel rather than the drone of traffic.
