Curator's note

Ana Sagar lake, the 12th‑century water‑bowl that Ajmer built around a ruler’s ego, is a surprisingly decent half‑day stop if you’re already in the pilgrimage city for the Dargah Sharif. The reservoir sprawls roughly 13 km² on the city’s western fringe, its concrete‑lined promenade punctuated by the lone Meghe Ka Talab and the crumbling, stone‑tiled Chamunda Devi steps that plunge into the water at sunset – the only time locals tolerate the tourist‑gathered chatter. Arrive early, around 07:00, to avoid the mid‑day heat that turns the lake into a mirror for ash‑laden sky and to catch the slow‑motion joggers and the occasional, weather‑worn fishing‑boatmen humming early‑morning prayers. A quick detour to the nearby Adhai‑Din Ka Jhonpra mosque (a 12th‑century ruin) is worth the extra 10 minutes; the back alleys of the old bazaar that flank the lake are a maze of sandal‑scented stalls selling bajra rotis and chaats you’ll never find in a tourist‑centric menu. Skip the “boat rides” promoted by the Government’s tourism desk – the rickety paddle‑crafts are overpriced, overcrowded and the view from the shore is superior. Stay in a heritage guesthouse on Mulla‑Ali Road; the airy rooms with arched windows offset the otherwise relentless dust of Ajmer. Late November to early March is the only window worth the trip; the monsoon turns the lake into a silt‑filled swamp and the summer searing sun makes the stone steps unbearable. Two hours is an honest allotment; longer feels like watching paint dry on a temple façade.
