Aman Lodge is the gateway that actually makes Matheran tolerable for anyone who can’t be coaxed into climbing three kilometres of dusty track on foot or braving a horse‑drawn carriage with a nervous driver; the little stop on the Neral–Matheran line lets you slip off the main train at Neral, alight at the parking lot and hop a rickety, steam‑powered shuttle that shunts you up to Matheran in about fifteen minutes, rain or shine, because unlike the rest of the season the line runs through the monsoon. The platform is nothing more than a weather‑worn wooden bench and a rusted sign that reads “Aman Lodge – Matheran 3 km”, but the view from the railing, overlooking the forest‑clad valley, is a useful distraction while you wait for the glass‑capped locomotive to wheeze past. Stay at the modest Hotel Albany or the more polished Mayur Inn just a stone’s throw from the station – both are within easy walking distance of the main market and the Sunset Point rope‑walk – and you’ll avoid the grubby guesthouses that overpromise on “heritage ambience”. Arrive early, especially on weekends, because the single‑track shuttle fills up fast; a ticket bought at the Neral counter is cheaper than the on‑site kiosk. Skip the idea of a private taxi; the road into Matheran is legally closed to cars and the few permits you’ll hear about are scams. In short, use Aman Lodge as the pragmatic, cheap, and oddly scenic alternative to the 10‑minute trek, but budget an extra half‑hour for the train’s inevitable delays and the inevitable queue for the single‑coach car that can barely fit a couple of suitcases.
