Curator's note

Ajanta is a day‑trip that tests patience more than reverence; the 30 monolithic caves cling to a sheer cliff above the Waghur River, but the journey from Aurangabad feels like a pilgrimage through dust‑choked lanes that most tourists ignore. Arrive before sunrise, park at the modest guardhouse on the Main Road, and hire a rickshaw to the base of the hill – the driver who knows the shortcut through the scrub is worth his weight in chai. The early light softens the ochre of Cave 17’s ceiling, where the famed “Maha‑Bodhi” fresco finally reveals its gilt fringe; skip the over‑explained audio guide and let the silence amplify the subtle colour shifts. Cave 1 and Cave 2 contain the grand narrative panels, but the true gems are the tucked‑away shrines of Cave 10 and Cave 26, where the delicate brushwork of the “Tirthankara” scenes feels almost illicit in its intimacy. A two‑hour trek up the steep, uneven steps is inevitable, so sturdy shoes and a bottle of water are non‑negotiable; the heat of May and June will melt even the most zealous pilgrim, so late October to early March is the only sensible window. Stay the night in Aurangabad’s heritage quarter near Panchakki; the modest guesthouse there offers cool rooms and a rooftop view of the sunrise that will make the trek feel less like a chore and more like a rite. Skip the souvenir stalls at the base – the lukewarm tea and cheap prints are far louder than the silence of the sanctum. Two days in Aurangabad allows time for a quick stop at the Bibi Ka Maqbara and the Daulatabad Fort, but if the caves are your only aim, one focused morning and an afternoon tea are honest enough.
