Ahmedabad Museum

Bronzes, miniatures, and a courtyard the British missed.

Curator's note

The Ahmedabad Museum, tucked behind the modest façade of the old Municipal College on Kankaria Road, is a surprise‑packed stop for the patient traveller, not the sightseer with a ticking clock. The building itself, a 1930s British‑era hall with a high, columned courtyard that the colonial planners apparently thought a “proper space for contemplation” but which now houses a glass‑lighted display of 12‑centimetre‑high silver miniatures, is worth a slow walk at opening (9 am) when the morning sun slants through the east windows and the crowds are still a few people deep. The bronze collection – a series of Jain and Hindu votive figures dating from the 9th to the 14th century – should be viewed from the raised platform that allows you to see the patina change under the angled light; the lower‑level annex of contemporary crafts is overrated and can be skimmed in ten minutes. A tea break at the small canteen opposite the courtyard, where the samosa‑stuffed bhaji is fresher than the museum shop’s overpriced guidebooks, restores stamina before you tackle the photographic exhibition on the Ahmedabad textile trade, which is the only part worth lingering for. Friday evenings are closed, and the monsoon months (July–September) mute the courtyard’s ambience, so aim for late October to February; two hours is honest, three if you intend to sit on the marble benches and sketch the reliefs.

Tips
  • Go early; crowds peak by 11am
  • Local guides charge ₹500 — worth it for the stories
