Curator's note

Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is the unsung tiger‑reserve that lives in the shadow of more famous neighbours, and it rewards the patient traveller who can tolerate a three‑hour road scramble from Raipur to the modest town of Mungeli before the forest begins. The only realistic base is the Government Rest House on the main highway or the modest Eco‑Lodge at Bhoram Dev, both of which force early mornings; you will be grateful for a pre‑packed breakfast of boiled eggs and chai before the 6 am Jeep entry at the forest gate near Khamdha, when the forest is still mist‑laden and the leopards stir. The sanctuary’s non‑negotiable highlights are the tiger‑watching trek from Khairi to the Ghangul River, the lush bamboo corridors of the Dindori sector, and the ancient rock‑shelter at Bhoram Deo, which doubles as a local tribal shrine. Skip the over‑hyped night‑safari in the Anuppur sector – the road is rutted, the guide chatter loud, and sightings rare – and instead book a guided walk through the core zone with a Forest Department naturalist; the chance of spotting a sloth‑bear or a barking deer is far higher. The best time is post‑monsoon, October to February, when the air is crisp and the wildlife congregates near waterholes; avoid May–June, when the reserve turns into a scorching scrub. Two days is honest for a tiger sighting and a cultural walk, three lets you linger by the Khamdhara waterfall and sample the simple thali at the nearby Kanker‑border dhaba.
