Hyatt Ujjain Residency

Residency in Ujjain. Old, layered, dust-and-gold.

Why we picked it

Hyatt Ujjain Residency is a tired‑looking relic perched on the fringes of the main bazaar, where the past has been plastered with cheap motifs and the air smells faintly of incense and stale curry. The lobby, with its cracked marble floor and a chandelier that flickers like a dying temple lamp, offers a decent tea service at 4 pm—order the masala chai, it’s surprisingly robust—but expect the Wi‑Fi to drop the moment you scroll past the front desk. Rooms are functional, not luxurious; the king‑size bed is surprisingly comfortable if you can ignore the thin, embroidered curtains that do little to keep the relentless noon heat out. The bathroom is equipped with a rain shower that sputters at best, so bring a backup towel. Food is the only saving grace: the all‑day buffet at 12.30 pm serves a decent poha, and the rooftop bar at 6 pm offers a view of the Kshipra River that makes the hotel's gaudy exterior tolerable. Skip the “heritage” spa treatments—they’re overpriced and indistinguishable from any mall massage. Best visited in October–February when the river mist cools the city; avoid the monsoon when the surrounding streets turn into a soggy maze. For a night’s shelter near the Mahakaleshwar Temple, it works, but don’t expect anything more than a respectable pit stop.
