Park Hyatt Tosh Manor

Manor in Tosh. Old, layered, dust-and-gold.

Why we picked it

Park Hyatt Tosh Manor is less a boutique resort and more a time‑capsule tucked into the upper reaches of the Parvati Valley, where the air is thin, the Wi‑Fi is intermittent and the staff wear the same faded sherwanis they inherited from the 1920s British tea‑planters who built the original manor. Book a room on the west side – the ones that open onto the pine‑clad slope – if you want sunrise over the snow‑capped peaks; the east‑facing suites are merely a pre‑dawn alarm. The wood‑burner in the lounge cracks at 8 am, and the tea service (Darjeeling first‑flush, served in chipped porcelain) is the only thing that feels intentionally curated; everything else feels stubbornly utilitarian. The in‑house restaurant, Himsen, insists on serving a seven‑course “local terroir” menu at 7 pm; the trout with Himalayan herbs is decent, but the accompanying Kashmiri naan is a soggy afterthought – skip it and ask for the plain roti they keep warm for the kitchen staff. The spa is a well‑meaning attempt to mask the high altitude chill with a lavender‑scented oil massage that leaves you smelling like a garden centre; the real perk is the outdoor deck, where you can watch goats amble past while the valley fog rolls in at noon. Visit between late September and early November: the monsoon will have washed the roads clean, the crowds have thinned, and the apple orchards near Manikaran are in full colour. Avoid December unless you relish sub‑zero nights and a near‑constant queue for the limited hot‑water showers. One night feels perfunctory; two lets you sleep through the daily prayer call at the nearby monastery and still have time to trek to the hidden waterfall at Chandratal without feeling rushed.
