Shakti 360° Leti

4 stone-and-glass cottages, 2,700m up, facing the inner Himalayas. Nothing else for 50km.

Why we picked it

Shakti 360° Leti sits like a glass‑capped boulder 2,700 m above Nainital, tucked in a valley that hasn’t seen a car for fifty kilometres, so the first rule is to accept the isolation and plan a slow‑arrival: fly into Pantnagar, hire a 4×4 for the 3‑hour, winding ascent on the Nainital‑Kumaon road and aim to reach by mid‑afternoon when the sun loosens the mist and the cottages’ floor‑to‑ceiling panes reflect the inner Himalayas in unblemished detail. The four stone‑and‑glass cabins are deliberately sparse – no minibars, no television, just a wood‑burner, a pair of hand‑loomed blankets and a balcony that looks out over the snow‑capped peaks of Trisul and Nanda Devi; book the uppermost unit if you want sunrise over the Dhauliganga gorge, but be prepared for the cold snap that hits at 5 am even in June. The only restaurant is a single‑chef kitchen serving seasonal Kumaoni fare – try the bhang ki roti with local mushroom bharta, and insist on a late lunch (around 2 pm) to avoid the chef’s midday rehearsal of the tea ceremony. Dress for altitude: layered wool, sturdy boots and a wind‑proof jacket; the only trail worth leaving the hotel for is the 45‑minute trek to the abandoned Leti monastery, which rewards patient walkers with a panoramic view that makes the trek feel like a pilgrimage rather than a hike. Avoid monsoon (July‑September) – the roads turn to slurry and the glass walls fog, turning the view into a grey veil – and plan for a three‑night stay; two days will give you the cabin experience and a single walk, but you’ll miss the evening bonfire where the owner spins tales of the 1947 Kumaon uprising, a surprisingly charismatic interlude that most travellers forget to ask for.
