The Oberoi Sangla Suites

Suites in Sangla. Old, layered, dust-and-gold.

Why we picked it

The Oberoi Sangla Suites, perched on a terraced slope above the Kinnaur River, feels less like a resort and more like a relic that has been lacquered with cashmere blankets and a veneer of Instagram‑ready vistas. Arrive in early October when the apricot orchards are ripe and the monsoon has finally emptied the gorge; the weather is crisp, the sky a relentless blue, and the crowds that swell in December have not yet arrived. The preferred room is the Heritage Suite on the upper mezzanine – the high‑ceilinged space still smells faintly of sandalwood and old prayer flags, the king‑size four‑poster bed is draped in hand‑woven Kinnauri blankets, and the private balcony offers an uninterrupted view of the snow‑capped peaks that the marketing brochure glosses over. Skip the “signature dinner” at the lounge; the menu is a generic mash‑up of paneer tikka and butter‑chicken that you can find cheaper in Shimla, and the service‑driven wine list is more about price than terroir. Instead, ask for the early‑morning tea on the terrace at 6 am, when the mist lifts off the river and the only sound is the distant clang of a shepherd’s bell. Stay the night in a wooden guesthouse in the nearby village of Sangla for a fraction of the price and a taste of authentic Kinnaur hospitality; the Oberoi’s spa, while competent, is no more than a well‑kept excuse to charge extra for a hot stone massage. Two nights here is honest – enough to soak in the view, dip in the heated pool, and then retreat to the valley before the hotel’s quiet luxury becomes a gilded cage.
