The Oberoi Pelling Suites
Suites in Pelling. Misted, monastic, mountainous.
The Oberoi Pelling Suites sits on a wind‑swept ridge above the Teesta, a place where the clouds linger like incense and the view of Kanchenjunga feels almost compulsory, so you may as well pay for the altitude. Arrive in late September or early November; the monsoon has washed the valleys clean and the winter chill hasn’t yet turned the terraces into ice. Book a mountain‑view suite on the upper floor – the lower ones betray the fog and you’ll spend the day peering at a grey smear. Dawn is the only time to sit on the private terrace with a steaming cup of Darjeeling; the sunrise over the snow‑capped peaks is worth the early alarm, and the staff will bring you a light breakfast of Aloo Paratha and spiced chai without you asking. The spa is decent but overpriced – skip the signature Himalayan stone massage and opt for the simple Ayurvedic oil rub if you must indulge. The restaurant, The Riverine, serves a respectable thukpa but the real treasure is the pantry bar where you can watch the chefs temper butter for a classic Gorkha butter chicken; order it with a side of local sikkimese fermented veg. Wi‑Fi is spotty on the ridge, so plan your work‑hours for the afternoon lull. Two nights lets you enjoy a full sunrise, a relaxed dinner and a day‑trip to the nearby Pemayangtse Monastery without feeling rushed; a third night is just a polite excuse to linger over the lingering mist.
